In this talk, I will discuss the quantisation of the non-supersymmetric tachyon-free heterotic string on AdS3 x S3 x S3 x S1 and AdS3 x S3 xT4 backgrounds, adapting to this context the world-sheet techniques developed in the literature for the bosonic string and type II superstring. This is motivated by recent results obtained from the point of view of the low-energy effective theory, where it was argued that these backgrounds correspond to perturbatively stable one-loop corrected vacua. Hence, we study the low-energy spectrum showing that, although tachyons are absent, there are moduli that can be used to deform the theory. We then discuss how these deformations introduce tachyons below the BF bound and the consequences for the stability of the model.
