Effective Superpotentials for compact D5-brane Calabi-Yau geometries

For compact Calabi-Yau geometries with D5-branes I discuss N=1 superpotentials depending on both open- and closed-string fields. I explain how to compute the open/closed Picard-Fuchs differential equations, which control D5-brane deformations and complex structure deformations of the Calabi-Yau space. The solutions of the differential equations encode the effective superpotential in flat coordinates, which in turn is the generating function of certain disk invariants. The presented techniques are demonstrated with an explicit example of a compact D5-brane in a Calabi-Yau hyperplane geometry.
