(28.05.) Yang-Mills type gauge theories for Lie groupoids

Conventionally, gauging is based on strict invariance of metrics used on the target space of a sigma model. Only recently, it was noted that this is overly restrictive: only the part of the metric co-normal to the (gauge) orbits needs to be invariant. Following this observation, one is led to regard more general structures governing the gauging than just finite dimensional groups. We show where this idea can lead to as a generalized framework for the construction of Yang-Mills gauge theories. While this gives a mathematical framework for the construction of physical theories, a concrete choice of a structural Lie groupoid that leads to a theory realized in nature is still to be unravelled.
