D-branes and orientifolds in gauged linear sigma models

I will briefly review the main results of my work with K. Hori and D. Page on D-branes in gauged linear sigma models and give an outlook of how to include orientifolds, an ongoing work with I. Brunner and R. Haslhofer. If time permits I will also discuss the relation and relevance of these topics to the work of Schellekens et.al. on Gepner models and to recent results on D-brane stability as well as on open topological string amplitudes.
